Photoshop in 60 Seconds: How to Use Frequency Separation Actions

One of the biggest trends in photo retouching is the use of the Frequency Separation technique. This process involves separating the skin texture from the colors and tones of the photo before using an array of tools to minimize skin imperfections and the look of pores. Alternatively, you can also download one of the amazing Frequency Separation Actions from GraphicRiver to help speed up the process.

How to Use Frequency Separation Photoshop Actions

Load your Photoshop action into the Actions panel. Make sure your image is set as the original Background Layer. Here is the image we’ll be working with.

Under the Action Group, select High Frequency Separation Skin then press Play. The action will take a few seconds to completely play out.

You’ll then be instructed to use a Soft Round Brush to paint white upon the black Layer Mask used for the effect.

Paint white all over the areas where you want to diminish the appearance of freckles to see them disappear. Adjust the Opacity to 85% for the Low Frequency Heavy Layer to bring back some of the original texture.
